Why it matters
Most cancers have no recommended screening test
Routine screening in the U.S. covers only a handful of cancers, such as breast and colorectal cancer. Most cancer types have no guideline-recommended screening (PMID 42773207), and many serious cancers, including cancers of the pancreas, ovary, liver and esophagus, are found only after symptoms appear.
The science
How the Galleri test works
Tumors release small fragments of DNA into the bloodstream, known as cell-free DNA (cfDNA). Cancer cells carry methylation patterns, chemical tags on their DNA, that differ from those of healthy cells. Galleri sequences the cfDNA in your blood sample and uses machine learning to read these patterns (PMID 34176681).
When a cancer signal is found, the test also predicts the tissue or organ where the signal most likely began, called the Cancer Signal Origin. That prediction helps your doctor focus the diagnostic workup.

The research
The research behind Galleri
The largest study of Galleri to date is PATHFINDER 2, a prospective study of 35,878 adults aged 50 and older with no suspicion of cancer, published in Nature Medicine in 2026 (PMID 42773207). Here is what each result means.
- 99.6%Specificity
When cancer was not present, the test correctly reported no cancer signal 99.6% of the time. False alarms are rare.
- 60.3%Positive predictive value
Of the participants with a positive result, 60.3% were diagnosed with cancer.
- 91.3%Cancer Signal Origin accuracy
When a signal was found, the test correctly predicted where in the body it began 91.3% of the time, which helps focus follow-up testing.
- 69.8%Detection in the 12-cancer group
Of the cancers diagnosed among 12 cancer types that cause about two-thirds of U.S. cancer deaths, the test detected 69.8%. Across all cancer types, it detected 39.3%.
- 99.2%Negative predictive value
Of the participants with a negative result, 99.2% were not diagnosed with cancer during follow-up.
- 0.6%Follow-up procedures
Only 0.6% of participants had an invasive procedure after a positive result, 90.5% of those procedures were nonsurgical, and no serious study-related adverse events were reported.
-
CCGA validation
Validated the test in 4,077 participants: 99.5% specificity, cancer signals detected across more than 50 cancer types, and 88.7% accuracy in predicting signal origin.

PATHFINDER
Brought the test into primary care and oncology clinics at seven U.S. health networks. Of 6,621 adults aged 50 and older, 1.4% had a cancer signal detected, and results guided each participant's diagnostic follow-up.

Galleri questions
What is the Galleri test?
Galleri is a multi-cancer early detection blood test developed by GRAIL. It reads methylation patterns in cell-free DNA from a single blood draw to look for a cancer signal shared by more than 50 cancer types, and it predicts where in the body a signal began. Nature & Science Medicine in Encinitas offers it with a results review by one of our naturopathic doctors.
How much does the Galleri test cost at Nature & Science Medicine?
$1,279. That one price includes the Galleri test, a 15-minute first visit with your blood draw here in the office, laboratory analysis at GRAIL, and a 30-minute results review with one of our naturopathic doctors.
Which cancers can Galleri detect?
In clinical validation, Galleri detected cancer signals across more than 50 cancer types (PMID 34176681), including cancers of the pancreas, ovary, liver and esophagus, which have no recommended screening test.
How accurate is the Galleri test?
In PATHFINDER 2, a study of 35,878 adults aged 50 and older (Nature Medicine, 2026, PMID 42773207), specificity was 99.6%, so false alarms were rare. 60.3% of positive results were confirmed cancers, and the test located where the cancer began 91.3% of the time. It detected 69.8% of cancers in the 12 types that cause about two-thirds of U.S. cancer deaths, and 39.3% across all types.
Does Galleri replace my regular cancer screenings?
No. Galleri is designed to complement your routine cancer screenings, such as mammograms and colonoscopies. Keep those on schedule. Galleri adds a look at the many cancers that have no recommended screening test.
What happens if a cancer signal is detected?
Your report names the most likely origin of the signal. In your results review, your doctor explains what it means and coordinates the next diagnostic steps, including referral to a specialist when needed.
Does a negative result mean I do not have cancer?
A No Cancer Signal Detected result is reassuring: in PATHFINDER 2, 99.2% of participants with a negative result were not diagnosed with cancer during follow-up. Galleri does not detect every cancer, so a negative result does not rule cancer out. Continue your routine screenings and tell your doctor about any new symptoms.
Who should not take the Galleri test?
GRAIL does not recommend the test for people who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.
Is the Galleri test FDA approved?
Galleri has not been cleared or approved by the FDA. It was developed by GRAIL, which determined its performance characteristics, and it is run in GRAIL's clinical laboratory, which is CLIA-certified and accredited by the College of American Pathologists.
