The basics
What is a naturopathic doctor?
A naturopathic doctor (ND) is a licensed doctor trained in conventional medical diagnosis and in natural therapeutics such as clinical nutrition, botanical medicine and lifestyle medicine. Naturopathic doctors look for why a symptom is happening, then build a plan that addresses the cause, using natural and conventional care together in whatever mix fits the patient.
How naturopathic doctors are trained and licensed in California
In California, naturopathic doctors are licensed by the California Board of Naturopathic Medicine. Licensure requires a four-year, in-residence doctoral program at a naturopathic medical school accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education: at least 4,100 hours of training, including 1,200 hours of supervised clinical practice. Graduates must then pass the NPLEX board examinations.
All three of our naturopathic doctors earned their Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine degrees at Bastyr University.

Naturopathic doctor questions
Prices checked October 24, 2026.
What does a naturopathic doctor do?
A naturopathic doctor takes a full health history, orders lab testing, makes a diagnosis and builds a care plan, much like any primary care doctor. The plan draws on clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, supplements, IV therapy and, when they fit, prescription medications. At Nature & Science Medicine in Encinitas, our naturopathic doctors see patients of every age.
Is a naturopath the same as a naturopathic doctor?
Not always. In California, people without a state license can practice naturopathy and advertise as a naturopath, but they must disclose that they are not licensed and may not diagnose a medical condition. Only a doctor licensed by the California Board of Naturopathic Medicine may use the title naturopathic doctor or ND. Every naturopath at Nature & Science Medicine is a licensed naturopathic doctor, and you can confirm any license through the California Department of Consumer Affairs License Search.
Are naturopathic doctors licensed in California?
Yes. Naturopathic doctors in California are licensed by the California Board of Naturopathic Medicine. Licensure requires a four-year, in-residence doctoral degree from a naturopathic medical school accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education, with at least 4,100 hours of training and 1,200 hours of supervised clinical practice, plus passing the NPLEX board examinations.
What is the difference between a naturopathic doctor and an MD?
Both complete four years of graduate medical school with training in the basic and clinical sciences. Naturopathic doctors also train in clinical nutrition, botanical medicine and other natural therapies, and they focus on why a symptom is happening. Many patients choose a naturopathic doctor as their primary care doctor, and we coordinate with specialists when needed.
Is naturopathic medicine the same as functional medicine?
Functional medicine is an approach that looks for the root causes of symptoms, practiced by clinicians with many kinds of training. Naturopathic medicine is a licensed medical profession with its own doctoral degree. Our naturopathic doctors use many of the same tools, including advanced lab testing such as DUTCH hormone testing, within a naturopathic care plan.
How much does a naturopathic doctor visit cost in Encinitas?
At Nature & Science Medicine, a new patient visit is $435 for 60 minutes, $495 for 75 minutes or $550 for 90 minutes. Your treatment plan visit is $220 for 30 minutes or $325 for 45 minutes, and follow-ups start at $140 for 15 minutes. Lab testing is priced by what is ordered.
Does insurance cover naturopathic doctor visits?
We can't bill insurance directly, since California naturopathic practices can't. We accept HSA and FSA cards, and we provide an itemized superbill on request that you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement.
What happens at my first visit with a naturopathic doctor?
Your first visit is 60 to 90 minutes with one of our naturopathic doctors. You go through your full health history and your goals, and your doctor orders the lab work that fits your case, with blood drawn here in the clinic. At your next visit, your doctor reviews the results with you and presents your written, personalized plan.
Do your naturopathic doctors see children?
Yes. We see patients of every age, from preconception to geriatrics. Our pediatric care covers infancy through adolescence, including well-child exams and school or sports physicals, plus support for concerns such as food allergies, eczema, asthma, digestive complaints and sleep. Plan on at least an hour for a child's first visit.
Can a naturopathic doctor be my primary care doctor?
Yes. Our naturopathic doctors provide integrative primary care for every age, from preventive care and lab work to the ongoing management of chronic concerns. When a case calls for a specialist, we coordinate and refer, so you keep one doctor who knows your whole history.
Where is your naturopathic clinic, and what areas do you serve?
Nature & Science Medicine is at 531 Encinitas Blvd, Suite 121, Encinitas, CA 92024, with free parking on site. We are open 10am to 5pm, seven days a week. Patients come to us from across North County San Diego, including Carlsbad, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Rancho Santa Fe, Cardiff and San Diego.
