What this one is

Just fluid, done properly — and not a saline bag. A drop of barely 1% of your body weight is enough to dull your focus and drive fatigue, and once you're behind, an IV restores your blood volume faster than drinking can. But plain saline is only two things, sodium and chloride, and it carries more of both than your own blood does. Most of us are already getting plenty of sodium; it's the rest that tends to run short. We use Lactated Ringer's instead — less sodium, far less chloride, and it brings the potassium, calcium and lactate buffer that saline leaves out entirely.

How this one differs

It's the only IV on this page with no additives at all — the fluid itself is the whole treatment, which is exactly why which fluid matters. Saline carries sodium and chloride and nothing else; Lactated Ringer's carries potassium, calcium and lactate as well, at sodium and chloride levels closer to your own blood. Every number is published below. Zofran or Toradol can be added if your provider thinks it's appropriate.
